The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the pupil.
Rationale 8: Students will be assessed weekly on math skills using the clicker system, Senteo Smart Interactive Response System. Students listen more attentively and participation is increased to 100%. During the week, informal assessments are conducted allowing me to differentiate to meet the needs of all learners. If review is needed, it is done right away. Formal assessments take place on Fridays. Students use the clickers Monday through Thursday informally, preparing them for the formal assessment on Friday.
8.K.2 The teacher knows how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments appropriate to the learning outcomes being evaluated and to other diagnostic purposes.
Students enjoy the clickers because they are highly interactive. The daily Math 4 Today lessons prepare students for the multiple choice/short answer quizzes at the end of each week. The math topics are spiraled throughout the year to ensure retention of the skills.
8.S.4 The teacher evaluates the effect of class strategies on both individuals and the class as a whole, collecting information through observation of classroom interactions, questioning, analysis of student work.
Students were questioned whether they prefer answering questions using the clickers or the traditional pencil and paper method. They were also observed on their level of participation and effort according to both methods of instruction. In the end, students were more observant, answered more questions accurately, and participated at a higher level when the clickers were involved.
8.D.2 The teacher is committed to using assessment to identify student strengths and promote student growth rather than to deny students access to learning opportunities. Assessments are used to determine if students understood the material. When students do poorly on assessments, the teacher knows further review is needed. If several teaching strategies did not meet the needs of every child, the instructor must seek out more ideas. Ongoing assessments meet the needs of students because they have the opportunity to learn again in a different way. Students can be an asset to developing strong teaching methods. Students should be involved in the preparation of how they learn.
